Chosen Exiles
We return to our series, Chosen Exiles. As we do, it seems rather apparent that we address a fear that we all share: hard times. We do not want hard times for any reason. Are we all in agreement?
In the context of our series, we definitely do not want hard times to come because we lack the authority or influence in our society to prevent them, such as is the case of exiled individuals. Moreover, we do not want others in authority to make hard times for us. If there is a chief fear among many today, it is the loss of ruling power and authority in our culture.
Well, Peter doesn't write to those who possess such things. As such, he gives us a gift to help orient ourselves in a world where our particular influence and control is waning. What do we do? How do we face such times?
Our dear friend Peter offers that we face such times with great dignity and courage that is rooted in this awareness that while hard times are reasonably feared and not wanted, they have a way of really testing our mettle. Do we really trust that Jesus is in ultimate authority over heaven and earth? Do we really believe that we are called to genuine love and patience and kindness and generosity and hospitality and honor towards others, including (according to Peter, 1 Peter 2:13-17) corrupt rulers and authorities, who might wield their power to make hard times for us? Are we willing to put that faith into action? We will soberly consider these things as we gather on Sunday.
